The Montana men’s tennis team is in Provo, Utah, this week for the ITA Mountain Region Tournament, set to run Sept. 21-25 on the outdoor courts at BYU.
The ITA Regional gives the premiere players in the Rocky Mountain West the opportunity to qualify for the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in the fall, while the NCAA also conducts team championships and individual player championships in the spring.
Representing the Griz in Provo are seniors Ed Pudney and Oisin Shaffrey, junior Boise State transfer Lawrence Sciglitano, sophomores Guillermo Martin and Moritz Stoeger, and true freshman Gustav Theilgaard.
The Grizzlies got off to a hot start in the doubles competition on Tuesday morning as well, with Shaffrey and Pudney taking an 8-6 win over the Waldman/Vroman pair from the Air Force Academy, Sciglitano and Theilgaard beating the 16-seeded Wolf/Garner pair from Air Force 8-6, and Stoeger and Martin beating the Li/Lin pair from Weber State 8-2.
“It’s always exciting to test ourselves against the very best programs in the West,” said head coach Jason Brown.
“This tournament should give us a good sense of where our level of play is at for the remainder of the fall season.”
Complete singles and doubles draws, and updated results can be found on the International Tennis Association website.
